Stash improvements#215

I miss having a better space in Butterdocs for capturing all the small text ideas—a kind of playground for rough thoughts before they’re ready for the main document. I thought the stash might be the right place for this, if it gets a few improvements:

  • Ability to create “stashes” directly from the stash tab.
  • A fullscreen editor for distraction-free writing
  • Better organization, perhaps with tags similar to those used in comments

Hey Mathias! What you’re descibing is a perfect use case for the notes in ButterDocs.

Here’s a video guide on notes from a fiction writing perspective:

Thank you, Micah!

I appreciate the features available in both Notes and Develop modes, though I haven’t found them particularly helpful for brainstorming. It’s possible that the “Playground” I mentioned earlier is actually what you refer to as Develop mode. I plan to explore it further, but currently, I find it a bit clunky. While I like the overall idea behind Develop mode, it can quickly become visually overwhelming. One of Butterdocs’ greatest strengths is its streamlined interface and flexible writing workflow, and that strength feels somewhat diminished here.

For example, when I open a note in Develop mode, all other notes remain static. I would love the ability to create “note sets” specifically for development—like a dedicated space for character building, where all character notes can be viewed side by side, or a collection of text snippets that can easily be expanded to fullscreen.

Additionally, the current structure of Develop mode—with one main note and supporting notes feeding into it—doesn’t match my preferred workflow. In contrast, the Outline section feels much more flexible and better suited to various ways of thinking and working. Develop mode, by comparison, feels rigid and narrowly defined.

I really enjoy writing in Butterdocs—it’s the best writing software I’ve used so far. For notes, idea capture, and iteration, though, I still rely on Craft, which offers easier page hierarchy and a faster way to jot down and organize thoughts. But I would much prefar to keep all work in one Butterdocs!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks again for considering this feedback!
